intake class 1

There are four types of classes to make use of in Steppit. Each provides a unique way to release your course material and mentor your students. They are Personal, Flexible, Intake and Open.

Here we’ll be diving into the Intake type, with a fab user case from Davinia Fermi Make Up Acadamy (DFMA).

Summary: Drip-fed, large community classes

Content unlocks weekly and students can post to a community feed shared course-wide. Perfect for setting the course pace in a large open community.

‘Intake’ type features:

  • Drip-fed course content – each week, a new course unit unlocks for learners
  • Course-wide posting feed – includes a photo upload posting feed shared by the wider course community
  • No chat – Has no group chat functionality
  • Unlimited spaces – No maximum limit on the size of your class
  • Low level of teacher support required – Drip-fed content keeps all your students at the same pace, and no group chat means you won’t need to respond to messages.

Pros

  • Lower effort for the creator running the course since there is no group chat to keep up with
  • High retention since drip-fed content helps set the pace and keep learners on track

Cons

  • Fewer opportunities to connect and engage with your learners

Use Case

The Davinia Fermi Make Up Academy offers just five online spaces once a month for their online course Fashion, TV & Media Makeup. This gives those who live further afield an opportunity to earn their certification without traveling to the London studios.

The course runs for 6 weeks and across 12 individual looks teaches 40+ industry-essential makeup techniques. Owner and founder, Davinia herself, is the sole mentor for this course and opts for an Intake class type to help manage her students through the course material.

Once signed up, the main channel of communication for students is a one-on-one private chat with Davinia who coaches them through the course material, providing feedback and a personalized learning experience depending on the student’s strengths and weaknesses.

There is only one further channel of communication. Every student ever enrolled in this course joins the main group feed which is where the aspiring and graduated make-up artists are encouraged to post examples of their work not only from the course but from their further experience out in the world. The group feed is beneficial because all students submit an array of work within their portfolios. Models, sets and scenarios will always be vastly different and Davinia looks to give her exclusive group of online students as much experience and exposure as possible.

As a busy business leader, it also enables Davinia to keep her class communication simple, to one collaborative field.
