What is a Session on Steppit?

Resource for

All Channels

A 'session' is just like a lesson – these are the building blocks that make up your online course on Steppit. In your sessions, you'll guide your followers through a new skill, set of concepts or a task.

Session Structure

Sessions include 'Steps' and 'Bits' of content.

Session ‘steps’

Breaking your session into steps will help you in a couple of ways:

  1. It will help you teach more clearly. By outlining what your session will cover and in what order upfront, you can rest easy when creating your session content. You will have planned ahead and thought it through, so you are less likely to miss something.
  2. It will make it easier for learners to grasp new concepts, follow along with techniques and absorb information if your session is in a digestible format. We struggle to process lots much information at once, so covering one thing at a time will make learning plain sailing!

‘Bits’ of content in your session

Within each step, you can create and upload bits of content. These can include different types of media:

  • Text 📝
  • Images 🖼
  • Audio files 🔈
  • Videos (portrait or landscape) 🎥

Each bit of content also includes a place to write a summary of what you have covered. This way, your learners can quickly read a recap of what they have seen, read an instruction, or you can use the space to give more context.

You can use different media types throughout a session, so choose the ones that suit your teaching style. It is easy to chop and change bits of content on Steppit, so feel free to experiment with what works for you!

Videos are a particularly engaging format for people to learn from, so we would recommend using videos if you can.

Example session

Take a look at the example session image below.

Example of a session in a course

You can see the steps listed on the left sidebar, and the bits of content are indicated by the blocks of text and small dots on the video. Clicking on the text or clicking 'Next' will navigate you to the next bit of content, and clicking on the numbered steps will navigate you to the various steps.

The structure of the session step visible in the image is:

Session Title: Fitting Kitchen Plinths

Step 2: Measure & Cut Rail

  • Bit 1: [Video clip with written summary]
  • Bit 2: [Video clip with written summary]
  • etc.

What is a Unit on Steppit?

You may have come across the term ‘units’ by now, but what do we mean when we say a unit? Grouping course content into sections is far from uncommon, and in the Steppit world, this is no different. That being said, course units on Steppit are a powerful way to bring structure and time-bound restrictions to your course to enhance the learning experience you provide for your course takers.
