What is a Unit on Steppit?

You may have come across the term ‘units’ by now, but what do we mean when we say a unit? Grouping course content into sections is far from uncommon, and in the Steppit world, this is no different. That being said, course units on Steppit are a powerful way to bring structure and time-bound restrictions to your course to enhance the learning experience you provide for your course takers.

What are units?

Units are groups of sessions. You can group your sessions into units to help give your course structure. You can break your course down into categories of what you will cover.

What are sessions? Find out in our article here.

Using units to structure your course

Planning the bare bones of your course by listing what you will cover in each unit is a great exercise to get you started. If you use our AI course planner tool, you will receive a list of course units automatically so that when you build your course, it already has a draft structure in place for you.

Here’s an example of some course units:

Introduction to Leatherwork

  1. Unit 1: Introduction to Leather
  2. Unit 2: Materials and Measurements
  3. Unit 3: Making a Wallet
  4. Unit 4: Making a Leather Bag

Within each unit, you will have your sessions. Your sessions will cover what you teach, the new concepts you explain or a practical activity for your course taker to try.

For example, you might have

Introduction to Leatherwork

  1. Unit 1: Introduction to Leather

    1. Session 1: Introduction to Leather Making
    2. Session 2: Why Use Leather Today?
  2. Unit 2: Materials and Measurements

    1. Session 1: Types of Leather
    2. Session 2: Sourcing Your Leather
    3. Session 3: Measuring and Cutting Equipment
    4. Session 4: Practicing Measuring and Cutting
  3. Unit 3: Making a Wallet

    1. Session 1: Templates to Choose From
    2. Session 2: Creating Your First Leather Wallet
  4. Unit 4: Making a Leather Bag

    1. Session 1: Templates to Choose From
    2. Session 2: Creating Your First Leather Bag

Using units to drip-feed content

Your units can set the pace of your course for your course takers by unlocking week-to-week. When your course is published and you have created a class, you can choose how your views will access your course.

If you select the class type Personal or Intake’, your course takers will get drip-fed one unit per week, and the other units will remain locked until they reach that week in time. For information about the other class types we offer, check out this resource.

Here’s an example of what a course with locked units looks like:

Example Course with Units Locked

For this course taker, You can see that only Unit 1 is accessible. One week later on 11th August, Unit 2 will unlock, then Unit 3 on 18th August and so on.

What are the benefits of drip-feeding content?

People can participate in the same unit together when your course units unlock week-to-week. Here are some of the benefits:

  1. Helps you manage your time – You can share your feedback on photo uploads and respond to messages on the same topic rather than jumping around your course content.
  2. Boost engagement and motivation – Focusing on one topic at a time helps your audience avoid cognitive overload and stay more consistent with their course.
  3. Creates a vibrant, active community – People focusing on the same goals engage with one another to benefit from social learning. Your audience can encourage one another, share their tips, and help one another solve problems.

So now you are filled in! Units are a great way of helping you plan, give your course structure, and provide a great experience for your viewers.
